Woman reunited with her late mother's antiques at a charity store, spends $300 to honor her mom's memory and to donate to a good cause: 'I donated these tables, I'd like to buy them back'

We can't keep every little thing after our parents pass, but when some family heirlooms circle back into our paths by happenstance, it must be a sign. 

Parents accumulate a lot of stuff. Perhaps it's because older generations grew up with so little that they cling to every little belonging, or the fact that they've had $25,000, five-bedroom houses since 1986. Packing the attic with newspapers, Christmas decorations, and whatever yearbooks fit in that dusty ol' cabinet, scouring through your parents' things is much like the full-time job of an antiques curator in a museum. However, after parents have passed on and left their worldly possessions to their offspring, family antique curation feels more like a junkyard haul than a trip down memory lane. 

A woman was in the thick of going through her late mother's belongings, trudging through photo albums, winter clothes, and broken sleds from her teenage years. After a while, a lot of the attic's inhabitants just seemed dusty and old, so she donated most of her mom's old stuff. However, after a few months of reflection and well-deserved mourning, the woman began to regret her choice of minimalism, dreaming of the hidden heirlooms of her mom's mysterious past. 

With a stroke of luck, the daughter was reunited with something she thought was long lost: Her mother's Brandt nesting tables. 

Sitting in the center of a charity shop with a discounted price tag and a few new scuffs, the furniture that once held meaning to her late mother was not only arms-length away. So the woman did what any family historian would do; she paid full price to buy back her mother's furniture, donating to a good cause and rebuilding her own family heirloom collection in the process.

  • When my grandma passed, she didn't leave much behind apart from piles of newspaper, cash shoved in shoes, and a marvelously well-kept collection of cashmere sweaters. Because of that, heirlooms are a mysterious and intriguing part of society. With so much meaning pouring into an object, it's no wonder this woman serendipitously stumbled upon her late mother's old things. The furniture set must have been looking for her, too!

    I work in a charity store that sells donated items. We get some really great stuff including high- end and antique furniture. Stuff like that gets researched and priced by management to make sure the price is fair, but also what the stuff is worth.

  • I explain that they're on sale, so it's down to $300, and she had $50 in store rewards, so with tax it's $274. She's honestly thrilled, I think more that the tables were still there and she didn't care so much about the price. She said she was happy to pay since it's for a good cause.
